Bright Shiny Objects

Bright shiny objects are dangerous, both to you and your customers. As a business owners we receive offers every day for new ways to do things promising fantastic results. The latest technology, the newest App which will bring a stream of new enquiries.

Scared of being left behind, impatient with our existing strategies, or not putting in the effort to make them work, we opt for the promised quick easy fix. Being new, there hasn’t been time to see whether it actually works at all, or will work for your business, but eager to get that jump on our competitors, we change our course and reach for the bright shiny object.

The same is also true for your customers. While you have been providing them with a consistently reliable service over the years, they have also been attracted by bright shiny objects offered to them by your competitors. The promise of quicker, cheaper and better.
There is no place in business to rest on your laurels. The only time you can coast in business is when you are going downhill.

This is not to say you must chase your existing customers with your own bright shiny objects just to keep them, but your service does need to be continuously updated and refreshed so that they don’t feel they are missing out. The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.

Have you noticed a drop-off in repeat business and a loss in new enquiries? What is your strategy to update your service? Has it changed in the last three years?

A review of your market place will identify how it has changed, what your most innovative competitors are doing and which bright shiny objects are just bubbles and distractions to you and your customers.
